      1. Home : Oxford English Dictionary

        Website  • Oxford English Dictionary (OED) online is more powerful than the printed version as it has many useful search tools. The OED is particularly useful for looking up obscure words that appear in primary sources. Note that spelling was not standardised until the late eighteenth century, so you should always try a number of alternative spelling if you cannot find a word.

      2. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

        Webpage  Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford DNB) contains ‘50,000 biographies of people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the earliest times to the year 2002’. It is the best resource to use when you need to find out basic details about particular individuals

      3. Early English Books Online - EEBO

        Webpage  Early English Books Online (EEBO) contains digital facsimile copies of virtually every work printed in English from 1473-1700. Some books have also been transcribed so that their text is searchable – look out for these as they are much easier to use.

      4. Eighteenth Century Collections Online  Home

        Webpage  Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) includes the digital images of every page of 150,000 books published during the 18th Century, including some early works by historians.

      5. Brepolis: BBIH

        Webpage  The Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is the most comprehensive bibliographic database to search for items on British history. Unlike other similar databases it contain references to books, and chapters in edited collections, as well as journal articles. It also contains references to local history publications, including collections of documents, which are often omitted from other databases. It will allow searches by time period, topic, and geographic area.

      6. British History Online

        Website  British History Online contains digitised reference books and collections of documents. The Letters and Papers of Henry VIII are available here, and are essential for studying the rebellions of 1536.

      7. British Library EThOS - search and order theses online

        Webpage  EThOS allows you to access digital copies of unpublished PhD theses, such as the ones by Aubrey Greenwood and Amanda Jones which are listed on the reading list below.

        Webpage  By all means use Wikipedia to find out basic details about events or individuals but never, never, never use it as your only source. You should try and avoid referencing Wikipedia in footnotes and bibliographies: it makes it look as if you could not find anything better, and you should be able to.
